Summary

#1 New York Times bestselling author Patricia Cornwell returns with the remarkable twenty-fourth thriller in her popular high-stakes series starring medical examiner Dr. Kay Scarpetta.

In the quiet of twilight, on an early autumn day, twenty-six-year-old Elisa Vandersteel is killed while riding her bicycle along the Charles River. It appears she was struck by lightning—except the weather is perfectly clear with not a cloud in sight. Dr. Kay Scarpetta, the Cambridge Forensic Center’s director and chief, decides at the scene that this is no accidental Act of God.

Her investigation becomes complicated when she begins receiving a flurry of bizarre poems from an anonymous cyberbully who calls himself Tailend Charlie. Though subsequent lab results support Scarpetta’s conclusions, the threatening messages don’t stop. When the tenth poem arrives exactly twenty-four hours after Elisa’s death, Scarpetta begins to suspect the harasser is involved, and sounds the alarm to her investigative partner Pete Marino and her husband, FBI analyst Benton Wesley.

She also enlists the help of her niece, Lucy. But to Scarpetta’s surprise, tracking the slippery Tailend Charlie is nearly impossible, even for someone as brilliant as her niece. Also, Lucy can’t explain how this anonymous nemesis could have access to private information. To make matters worse, a venomous media is whipping the public into a frenzy, questioning the seasoned forensics chief’s judgment and “a quack cause of death on a par with spontaneous combustion.”

My Review

I absolutely LOVE Cornwell and the Scarpetta series, however this wasn’t the best in the series. There was a lot of buildup to a fairly fast ending. The book is entirely narrated by Kay Scarpetta and talks about her family and the past and things that anyone who has read the majority of this series would already know. That said, its a GREAT book for someone who is new to Cornwell and the Scarpetta series! It wasn’t as big of a page-turner as other Scarpetta novels, but it was still good and a book I will keep on my shelves to read again!

I did feel like I have missed the last book previous to this because there were some major life changes for one of the main characters, but it was explained enough to understand and to be honest, I don’t know if it would be in a prior book. I will certainly find out when I see the book I am missing!

Goodreads Summary

Detective Jake Roberts’ superiors in Atlanta Homicide gave him a choice––retire, or face criminal prosecution for going beyond the rules to capture serial killer Jared Hamilton. Jake decided to retire and move with his Hollywood agent girlfriend Caitland to LA where he pens best-selling crime novels. The two take a mini-vacation to visit Fred, Jake’s best friend, in Phoenix.

Bobby Goode is a superstar comedian. During his opening night in Phoenix, he humiliates a heckler. After the show, the heckler stalks Bobby and takes a baseball bat to him on a dark city street. Bobby shoots the heckler in self-defense then panics from fear that he will lose his fame and fortune.

Phoenix homicide detectives Wynter Williams and Vince Farina are at the crime scene investigating a charred body found inside a torched Cadillac. They ask Jake to consult on the case. Jake and Wynter later determine it was Bobby they are looking for. On closing night, inside the comedy club, Jake and Wynter arrive to arrest Bobby. A single gunshot deafens the crowd.

My Review

This is the third book The Jake Roberts series and in my opinion it is one of the best. We see that Roberts is forced to retire from his position or face criminal charges and again I feel that this fits in with what happens in real life as we often see police or people who are high up in the community step down rather than face criminal charges.

Jake’s expertise is soon needed and he is asked to consult on a case and this leads the thriller that we all expect from the Jake Roberts series!

This is a fast paced crime novel that once again mimics real life pretty closely.

I recommend the Jake Roberts series to all crime novel fans, you won’t be disappointed until you realize you have read through the whole book and need to get the next in the series. Author Cary Allen Stone may have his work cut out for him as readers demand more from this series.

My Review

Mind Over Murder is the sequel to After the Evil and it is just as fast paced and accurate as After the Evil is. Unfortunately this book doesn’t have many reviews and it definitely deserves them! As the summary says it is the perfect serial killer read and once again I was glued to the pages and turning them without even realizing it until the story was over and I was longing for more. Cary Allen Stone has a way of writing that I can’t exactly pinpoint but his research, character build and of course the story is all laid out in a captivating way that definitely sucks you in and holds you there.
