Summary

Finding Joy in Reading God’s Word
When it comes to the Bible, most of us talk about two things: Is it true? And how should it impact our lives? But you may be missing something vitally important: Do you “like” the Bible? If you don’t, consistency will always be a struggle, and the Bible will be less likely to transform you.
Keith Ferrin has been talking to churches about enjoying the Bible for years, and now he’s compiled his most helpful tips. Written in a friendly, conversational tone, Ferrin teaches you how to develop a relational mindset and to approach the Bible in a way that lines up with the way your brain learns best. “How to Enjoy Reading Your Bible” will help you genuinely love the Bible more, read it more consistently, and apply God’s Word to your everyday life.

My Review

This is a simple to read book that really emphasises reading your Bible rather than spending hours or weeks learning how. I really appreciate that this book is so down to earth, has recommended scripture readings and each “chapter” is called a “Tip”. As someone who studies the Bible daily I know how easy it can become a chore and at times that has caused separation between me and the Word. This book came at the right time (God has good timing, perfect actually) and I read it just as I was beginning to slide into that slump. I am so excited to have received this book for review from Bethany House Publishers because I don’t think I would have bought it on my own. Now, it is a treasure that I will read again and again and I have already recommended to others!

If you are only going to buy one book this year about studying the Bible then this should be it! Definitely five stars!

The 10 Commandments of Marriage
Practical Principles to Make Your Marriage Great

By: Ed Young
Published by: Moody Publishers
Estimated Publication date: October 1, 2014
ISBN: 9780802412249

Description

Marriage is God’s idea. He planned it. He designed it. And if you follow His blueprint, it will be more rewarding, more loving, more exciting than you ever imagined.

In 10 Commandments of Marriage, Dr. Ed Young shares the “thou shalts” and the “thou shalt nots” of successful relationships – straight from the pages of God’s Word. Long-married couples will find love-building precepts that will revive a failing marriage and make a great relationship even better. Soon-to-be-marrieds will discover what marriage is all about, and gain priceless insights into starting on solid ground.

In words that are profound, often humorous, but always biblical, Dr. Young draws from decades of counseling couples to provide 10 commandments for a lifelong marriage that sizzles. God wants your marriage to be nothing short of incredible. And it could begin with this amazing book.

According to Beth Moore (bestselling author and speaker), “The 10 Commandments of Marriage not only tells you ‘what.’ Thankfully, it tells you ‘how.’ Ed Young has taken the principles of Scripture and has had the courage to test them on the linoleum glued to average life on planet earth.”

My Review

I absolutely loved this book and I recommend it to anyone who is in a relationship or plans to be in one at some point. I am sure I will be turning back to it time and again. It is well written, contains relevant stories and comparisons and most definitely ties the biblical teachings into the message.

While I don’t think you need to be a Christian to benefit from this book I do believe that Christians would benefit most from it because of the biblical references. We are shown time and again throughout the bible how a marriage should and shouldn’t be and Ed Young ties all of that information together, simplifies it, and makes it applicable to you and me.

I definitely recommend this book and because I received and e-copy for the purpose of review that isn’t “finalized” it will be in my shopping cart soon!

I don’t often give “glowing reviews” but this book energized me spiritually and showed me where I need to work on myself to be the best I can be for my partner.

50 Women Every Christian Should Know – Learning From Heroines of the Faith

By: Michelle DeRusha
Published by: Baker Books a division of Baker Publishing Group
Date: September 16th 2014
ISBN: 9780801015878

Description

The inspiring stories of the women who helped to shape our faith

Throughout history, countless women have boldly stepped out in faith and courage, leaving their indelible mark on those around them and on the kingdom of God. In lively prose Michelle DeRusha tells their stories, bringing into focus fifty incredible heroines of the faith. From Catherine of Siena, Teresa of Ávila, and Anne Hutchinson to Susanna Wesley, Harriet Tubman, and Corrie ten Boom, these admirable women live again under DeRusha’s expert pen. These engaging narratives are a potent reminder to us that we are not alone, the battles we face today are not new, and God is always with us in the midst of the struggle.

My Review

I really thought I would love this book, especially with the advanced praise it has received by so many people that I highly respect. However, I have to admit I didn’t like this book. It was a great historical reference but it definitely wasn’t something I would read for pleasure the way I had thought it would be. I had expected a book that helped me to tie my life to those through history and to feel encouraged by these 50 women, yet it felt a lot like I was reading a text book and I struggled to retain the information in it.

As a resource I think this book would make an excellent addition to your shelf, but I don’t recommend it as anything more than a text book.

Advance Praise

“This book is rich in inspiration and information. Reading it opened my eyes, broadened my vision, and challenged my faith. I highly recommend it to both men and women!”–Warren W. Wiersbe, author and former pastor of the Moody Church, Chicago

“Fifty women who teach us that famous isn’t about how many people know your name and that brave often looks like pressing on even when you’re afraid. My daughter and I are both indebted to Michelle for introducing us to many women we’d never met before and are sure never to forget.”–Lisa-Jo Baker, community manager for (in)courage and author of Surprised by Motherhood

“In the face of some of the same questions, temptations, and doubts we encounter today, these women were pioneers. Their stories give the church of today–men and women alike–a courageous and brave example of living faith and of living
out faith, the evidence of things unseen.”–Deidra Riggs, managing editor of The High Calling and founder of Jumping Tandem

“In this thoroughly researched and well-written work, Michelle DeRusha invites us into the lives of fifty women whose stories are our stories. This book inspired me, challenged me, and made me feel so proud to be a woman who belongs to Jesus.”–Jennifer Dukes Lee, author of Love Idol
